Nothing Beats Mom’s Cooking

Tonight, I made my first home-cooked meal in my apartment. Since I’ve been missing my mom’s home-cooked Chinese food, I decided to go with one of my favorite dishes of hers: chicken and broccoli stir fry. It’s incredibly simple to make, but it tastes really, really good.

I’m happy to report that my dinner was a success (the stir fry was served with a side of steamed white rice). However, it still didn’t taste as good as my mom’s. I guess nothing will ever beat my mom’s cooking – not even my own!

Weekly Wrap-up #7 (powered by free movie screenings, transporting cupcakes in the heat, and room decorating)

One of my roommates has become the queen of free movie screenings over the summer. She’s managed to turn the skill of securing free movie passes for screenings before the movies are released into an art form. Last Tuesday, she offered me a pass to see Conan the Barbarian. When I asked her what the movie was about (remember, I’ve been in China all year and have no clue what’s going on in US pop culture) she said “I think I heard it’s an epic like Troy.” I liked Troy well enough, so I agreed to go.

For all the faults Troy has, I still consider it to be a decent movie. When compared to the awful, awful mess that was Conan the Barbarian however, it practically sets the standard for awesome movies. Conan the Barbarian was so, so horrible that five minutes into the movie I wanted to leave. I’ve never felt that way about a movie. I love free movies as much as the next person, but even if the movie is free it still takes time which is valuable. Long story short… while the screening experience was fun, don’t go see Conan the Barbarian.

I’ve made it a goal to have my room fully unpacked and 75% decorated by this coming Monday. It’s taken me far too long to fully unpack (yay procrastination!) and as the last of my things I have yet to sort out are mainly of the decorative type, I may as well finish decorating my room. I’ve put up posters and knickknacks of my travels, as well as a few framed photos. I still need to put up my map of the world (in which I stick pins to mark places I’ve been to) as well as photos of friends. Then my room will really be “mine.”

Also, I think cupcake bakeries should offer some sort of cooler-type packaging when taking cupcakes to go in hot weather. I bought a box of cupcakes from Hello Cupcake in DuPont Circle to bring to a friend’s dinner and while I was waiting for the bus, the icing started sliding off the cupcakes. Luckily I got home in time and stuck them in the fridge before the icing slid off completely, but I still feel like this is something cupcake companies should look into.

Restaurant Week 2011 (Chef Geoff’s Edition)

One of my roommates and I went on a best friend date at Chef Geoff’s to celebrate both my return to the U.S./the District and Restaurant Week. It was absolutely wonderful. I had been to Chef Geoff’s once previously, but this time took the cake.

We ordered three courses each for $35.11USD thanks to Restaurant Week prices (not including drinks and tax). I ordered goat cheese stuffed fried green tomatoes, pan seared scallops with basil risotto, and peach mousse with raspberry sorbet. To say that my tastebuds died and went to food heaven is a severe understatement. The food was all so good!! We both ate so much delicious food that we were afraid we would have more than a little trouble walking home. (Luckily, we made it back without any trouble.)

I’m not sure if I’ll make it out to any other restaurants participating in Restaurant Week this week, but I am really glad that we made it to Chef Geoff’s. I’ve been wanting to eat there ever since freshman year but just never got round to it for whatever reason. And once I turn 21 (in 6 days!!) I’ll be able to join my friends at Chef Geoff’s Happy Hours :)
