Introducing One of Amnesty International’s Fall Interns

Yesterday I received the news that I will be interning at Amnesty International’s media relations unit during the fall semester. To say that I am excited is a huge understatement; I’m beyond stoked. I’ve dreamed of working at Amnesty International since I was a little kid and my mother shared stories about events such as Tiananmen. The very idea that I’ll now be interning in Amnesty International’s DC office is one that I find incredibly hard to wrap my head around. The 14-year-old me who decided on the topic of human rights in China for a class project wouldn’t have believed that I’d be interning there seven years later, either.

I’ll be starting in exactly two weeks. I’ll have an orientation to attend, and then I’ll start my position as an intern in the media relations unit. I can’t wait!!

Weekly Wrap-up #6 (powered by interviews, wearing high heels, and catching up on Glee)

I’ve been brushing up on my interview techniques the last week as I’ve been interviewing for a fall internship. I’ll have more news about the internship (hopefully) early this coming week. Getting interviewed is kind of like riding a bicycle. I was very nervous at first as it’s been a while since I’ve interviewed for an internship, but I think I made out okay in the end. At least, I had a good feeling about it, which is really all I can ask for.

As I’ve been unpacking in my new apartment, I’ve re-discovered a lot of really cute high heels that I own. In Beijing, I never, ever wore heels because Beijing streets are just murder on shoes. I was all about flats and Converse in China, but now that I’m back in the States, I’m all about rocking the high heels. I wonder how long this phase will last. Either my feet will adapt to wearing heels and flats will feel alien after a while, or I’ll end up breaking an ankle. Hmmm…

I’ve been ordered by one of my roommates to finish watching Glee Season 2 this weekend. I’ve been powering through the episodes, and I’ve realized that a lot of the things I loved about the show during Season 1 just don’t exist anymore in Season 2. It’s quite sad, really. The songs are still great, though, so at least the show still has that going for it!

Weekly Wrap-up #5 (powered by moving, seeing friends and family, and unpacking)

This week was “Moving Week.” I packed up all my belongings in two suitcases and my mother’s CR-V and moved from my house in Chicago to my new apartment in Washington, D.C. Needless to say, it has been a rather crazy and stressful week. I’d say I’m about 85% of the way settled in at my new digs (thanks to all of my family and friends who helped me in the move-in process!); I still have a few boxes to unpack but I am set with all my furniture and belongings.

It’s been good to be back in D.C. The last time I was here was over a year ago, and I’ve forgotten just how much I loved being in the nation’s capital. It’s also been nice to see some of my friends again. Not everyone is in town yet, but I expect the rest of this month to be filled with many a reunion.

Speaking of reunions, I’m also seeing family and friends in the Pennsylvania/Delaware area this weekend. It’s the time of year where my family makes our annual trip to see my grandpa and aunts and uncles. It’s always good to go and see them every summer. It reminds me of when I was a little kid living in Delaware and we’d go up to Pennsylvania to see relatives once a month. It’s funny to think how those visits were over ten years ago… how time flies!
